Summary:
One of CLAMP's most popular works (vying only with Chobtis for superiority), CardCaptor Sakura (aka CardCaptors on American television) is the story of Sakura, a 10 year old girl who accidentally opens a magical book. Out spill the Clow Cards, each of which has a magic spirit that, if left unchecked, will wreak untold mischief. Sakura must find these cards with the help of Kero-chan, a little griffin-like fellow who was supposed to be guarding the book but fell asleep. Sakura also uses the help of her friend Tomoyo and meets up with Shaoran Li, a boy who wants to capture the cards for his own purposes.
The anime differs a bit from the manga in that more cards are added, plus there's the addition of a new character, Mei Lin. Note that CardCaptors is the extremely edited version of the anime that appeared briefly on American TV.
I have not read the manga but have heard it's a big darker than the anime (though still suitable for children). I've seen up to the 4th volume of the anime series and must comment that it's very cute indeed.
